Our ambition is to achieve a ZERO Carbon Footprint

Our ZERO Carbon Footprint ambition was established in our preceding ESG programme, Together Towards ZERO (TTZ). With the evolution of the programme to Together Towards ZERO and Beyond (TTZAB), we have raised our ambition level by  maintaining our targets towards 2030 and introducing a new 2040 target.

We will continue delivering on our Together Towards ZERO commitments, including our target of ZERO carbon emissions at our breweries and a 30% reduction of our value chain emissions by 2030. In addition to this, we will go Beyond by working towards a new target to achieve net ZERO carbon emissions across our entire value chain by 2040.

To achieve our ambition and targets on carbon, we will take concrete action across our value chain, and leverage carbon reductions from our new targets and activities within agriculture and packaging.

Our ambition is to achieve a ZERO Farming Footprint

With the evolution of our ESG programme from Together Towards ZERO (TTZ) to Together Towards ZERO and Beyond (TTZAB), we have introduced agriculture as a new ESG focus area. Within this, we have a ZERO Farming Footprint ambition which includes new targets and activities in our upstream value chain, and new milestones towards 2030 and 2040.

We will go Beyond by sourcing our raw materials from sustainable sources and from regenerative agricultural practices, targeting 30% of all raw materials by 2030, and 100% by 2040.

The activities we will undertake to achieve our ZERO Farming Footprint ambition will also create carbon impact benefits that will accelerate progress towards a ZERO Carbon Footprint across our entire value chain by 2040.

Our ambition is to achieve ZERO Packaging Waste

With the evolution of our ESG programme from Together Towards ZERO (TTZ) to Together Towards ZERO and Beyond (TTZAB), we have introduced packaging as a new ESG focus area. Within this, we have a ZERO Packaging Waste ambition which shapes new targets and activities in both our up- and downstream value chain, and new milestones towards 2030.

We will go Beyond by ensuring 100% of our bottles and cans are recyclable, reusable or renewable, and that 90% of these are collected and recycled after use. We are additionally targeting a 50% reduction in virgin fossil-based plastics and 50% recycled content in our bottles and cans.

The activities we will undertake to achieve our ZERO Packaging Waste ambition will also create carbon impact benefits that will accelerate progress towards a ZERO Carbon Footprint across our entire value chain by 2040.

Our ambition is to achieve ZERO Water Waste

Our ZERO Water Waste ambition was established in our preceding ESG programme, Together Towards ZERO (TTZ). With the evolution of the programme to Together Towards ZERO and Beyond (TTZAB), we have sharpened our ambition level and introduced additional targets and activities, as well as new milestones towards 2030.

We will continue on the path set forth in our Together Towards ZERO programme with yearly improvements in water efficiency and an industry-leading global target of 2.0 hl/hl in water usage, while maintaining our 1.7 hl/hl target for breweries in areas of high water risk. At breweries in these high-risk areas, we will go Beyond by introducing a new target to replenish 100% of the water consumed at these breweries.

Our ambition is to achieve ZERO Irresponsible Drinking

Our ZERO Irresponsible Drinking ambition was established in our preceding ESG programme, Together Towards ZERO (TTZ). With the evolution of the programme to Together Towards ZERO and Beyond (TTZAB), we have adjusted our ambition level to include additional targets and activities, with new milestones in 2030.

We will continue delivering on our Together Towards ZERO commitments, including encouragement of responsible behaviour through our brands, our packaging, and local partnerships. In addition to this, we will go Beyond by working towards new targets, including a 35% global portfolio share for our low-alcohol and alcohol-free brews to further expand consumer choice.

Our ambition is to source responsibly

Around the world, we collaborate with tens of thousands of suppliers. These business partners provide ingredients, packaging and logistics for our products, as well as other goods and services that keep our operations running. We seek suppliers who share our values and responsible approach to business. To work with us, they must meet the standards set out in our Supplier and Licensee Code of Conduct and accompanying technical standards, and commit to extending these standards to their own suppliers.

The standards include requirements on business ethics, labour and human rights, quality, health and safety, and environmental sustainability. We also drive action by suppliers in our other Together Towards ZERO and Beyond focus areas. For example, many of our suppliers have large carbon and water footprints, and we require them to commit to reducing carbon emissions and manage water risk; this in turn helps us cut our own value chain footprint.

Our ambition is to promote Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Our DE&I agenda is leader-owned and part of our Leadership Expectations

For Carlsberg DE&I is a business priority, not a compliance necessity. We will hold ourselves accountable for progress and measure our maturity through a number of initiatives, such as continuation of our DE&I survey and a triennial DE&I Maturity Assessment which are set out in our roadmap.

Diversity in our workforce is a prerequisite for harvesting diverse experiences and perspectives

We believe that getting the gender balance right will pave the way for more diverse representation, and we set time-bound targets for the share of women in senior leadership roles. Our target is to reach a share of 30% women in senior leadership roles overall by the end of 2024, and a minimum of 40% over time. We require diversity in all recruitments and promotions, in both the shortlisting and offer stages.

We provide equal access to opportunity and have zero-tolerance for discriminatory behaviors and harassments

A diverse and inclusive environment creates a sense of belonging among employees and a trust in our culture. The actions we take in connection with equity are important and send strong signals of our genuine commitment to DE&I. This means creating consistent, fair, and transparent policies and practices, and a zero tolerance for harassment and any form of discrimination, with a clear set of consequences for incompliance.

Inclusive leadership behaviors are the foundation for an inclusive culture and a global mindset

Leaders are at the core of our culture – driving and role modelling inclusive behavior. We are embedding inclusive leadership as a core trait in our Leadership Capability programme, and building inclusive leadership through dedicated training for our people leaders.

Our ambition is to respect human rights along the value chain

At Carlsberg Group, respect for people is an essential part of how we do business. As a signatory of the UN Global Compact, we are committed to its 10 principles, which include human rights, and we are also committed to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP) and conduct continuous due diligence against its criteria.

Our commitment to respect human rights applies to all our activities, relationships, and throughout the value chain, and it refers to internationally recognised human rights as described in the International Bill of Human Rights (including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and its two Optional Protocols), the International Labour Organization’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work and additional ILO conventions on labour standards on working hours, wages and benefits, and health and safety.

Our ambition is to always Live By Our Compass

Live By Our Compass. Live by our Compass is our approach to create a winning culture by defining common ethical behaviour that applies to all our employees.

In order to achieve our ambition, we strive to maintain a high-integrity culture through a world-class compliance programme. The backbone of the programme consists of our Code of Ethics & Conduct, which guides the daily decisions made by our employees and contract workers, and reinforces our compliance culture. It covers a wide range of issues, including anti-bribery and corruption, competition law, data protection and privacy, conflicts of interest, political activities, discrimination and harassment. Further guidance is provided in corporate policies and manuals that provide additional detail and examples to support our day-to-day decisions.

Our ambition is to always engage our communities responsibly

As a company, we influence consumer decisions and behaviours, and we work with suppliers, customers and partner organisations in wider ESG and philanthropic initiatives that impact consumers' and community members' lives.

Whether we are engaging consumers and local communities through corporate or brand-led ESG initiatives, our ambition is to always engage them responsibly, by conducting appropriate local initiatives that create positive impacts and mutual benefits for Carlsberg and for wider society.

At the corporate level, for example, we work with local NGOs in high-risk areas to safeguard shared water resources, while we also conduct local, brand-led water initiatives - examples from Poland and Vietnam respectively focus on nudging sustainable water consumption habits and providing rural communities with access to clean water. In these examples and in general, community engagement implies the responsible engagement of local partners, authorities, consumers and wider community members.
